16-track MIDI sequencer and In-Track sampling seamlessly link MIDI & Audio

The TRITON Extreme contains a 200 song / 200,000 note (maximum) 16-track sequencer. Besides being able to record your keyboard playing, you can also record the performances generated by the arpeggiator and RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play/Recording) function. The sequencer provides features such as template songs and independent play looping for each track, helping you record and create your songs smoothly and easily. In addition to recording MIDI on the tracks, you can record and edit patterns, and copy your own patterns or preset patterns to tracks or use them with the RPPR function.
You can begin sequencing from a variety of modes. The Auto Song Setup function automatically applies the settings of a program or combination to a song; if you're playing a program or combination when inspiration strikes, you can use this function to move to Sequencer mode instantly without forgetting your phrase or song idea. The TRITON Extreme's Open Sampling System lets you sample while in the Sequencer mode. Using In-Track Sampling, you can sample directly into the sequencer as it plays, adding vocal phrases, guitar licks and other audio elements to your song. The sequencer will automatically create the appropriate note data in the track to trigger the sample at the right moment.
Using the Tone Adjust parameter function, sounds can be edited on a sequence track without affecting the original program, giving you unprecedented control over your arrangements. You can use the Cue List to specify the playback order of your sequenced songs to easily build up a song from smaller sections, and to automatically play multiple songs consecutively. Sequence data you create can be saved in SMF Formats 0 or 1. You can resample these completed songs as Wave files, and create an audio CD by connecting a CD-R/RW drive to the USB A port.

High-performance Open Sampling System

- Conceptual diagram of the Open Sampling System

The TRITON Extreme is a sampling powerhouse, providing high quality mono or stereo 16-bit linear sampling at 48 kHz. In addition to In-Track Sampling, you can also resample your performance on the TRITON Extreme, and use a wide variety of other sophisticated functionality for virtually limitless music production potential.

Open Sampling System
The Open Sampling System lets you sample quickly and easily from the Program, Combination, and Sequencer modes, as well as from the sampling mode.
In Program, Combination, and Sequencer modes, you can use the functionality of each mode (filters, effects, arpeggiators, sequencer, etc.) while resampling the performance or sampling an external audio source from the input jacks. You can also mix the TRITON Extreme's performance with the external audio source and sample the result, or listen to the TRITON Extreme's playback and sample only the external audio source.
In Sampling mode you can sample sounds played from the keyboard, or apply insert effects to samples and internally resample them again. Samples can be manipulated with great flexibility.
In Sequencer mode, In-Track sampling allows you to record audio directly into the sequencer as you listen to the playback. In addition to the sample file, note data will be automatically created in the track to trigger the sample at the correct time when the song is played back. This In-Track Sampling function lets you sample vocals or guitar while the sequencer runs, just as if you were recording on a multi-track recorder. All of the waveform editing functions such as Time Slice or Time Stretch can be used to edit the sample. This seamless integration of sequencing and sampling lets you add new dimensions to the music you produce.

16-track MIDI sequencer and In-Track sampling

Sample editing that rivals dedicated samplers

The tools available in the TRITON Extreme for editing your samples rival those found on dedicated units, and include essential commands such as Normalize, Truncate, Cut, Copy, and Reverse. The waveform display provides a grid function to indicate resolution and tempo. There's even a Rate Convert function that changes the sampling frequency to create lo-fi sounds, and sophisticated editing capabilities such as Use Zero, Time Slice, Time Stretch, Crossfade, and Link so that you can edit your samples quickly and accurately, giving you the music production power you need.

Create your own multisamples to build new Programs and Drum Kits

Each sample you record can be assigned to an index – a particular key range, or zones - to create a multisample. Up to 128 indexes can be assigned to each multisample. A maximum of up to 4,000 samples can be addressed, for use in up to 1,000 multisamples. In Global mode, you can arrange drum samples across the keyboard to create your own drum kits, and edit them using the filter, amp, and effect settings selected for the oscillator. Mono multisamples can be easily converted into a single-oscillator program, and stereo multisamples to a double-oscillator program. Also, loop samples can be quickly tuned to match any tempo while in sequencer mode using the BPM adjust function.

Support for a variety of sources and formats

You can sample analog audio signals from a mic or audio device connected to the AUDIO INPUT jacks, or digital audio signals from a digital audio device connected to the S/P DIF jack. You can apply Insert effects to these signals as they are being sampled. AIFF, WAVE, AKAI (S1000/S3000), and Korg format sample data can be loaded into sample memory (after loading, all data is handled as Korg format sample data). AKAI program files can also be loaded to the TRITON Extreme as completely playable sounds, including key groups, velocity switching, filter, amp/pan, and EG settings. Sample data can be exported (written) as AIFF or WAVE files.

Ripping function

The TRITON Extreme provides a Ripping function that lets you digitally capture data directly from an audio CD inserted in a USB-connected CD-ROM or CD-R/RW drive. Alternatively, you can sample the analog playback of the audio CD via the AUDIO INPUT jacks.

Expandable sample memory

Sampled data can be stored in RAM (sample memory), or saved to CompactFlash or Microdrive media (purchased separately) inserted in the card slot. The TRITON Extreme comes equipped with 16 Mbytes of RAM, allowing approximately 2 minutes 54 seconds of mono sampling (1 minute 27 seconds of stereo sampling). By adding 72-pin SIMM boards* you can expand the memory to a maximum of 96 Mbytes (three 32-Mbyte SIMM modules). In this case, you will be able to record approximately 2 minutes 54 seconds in mono (approximately 1 minute 27 seconds in stereo), into each of the 6 RAM banks, for a total of approximately 17 minutes 28 seconds (approximately 8 minutes 44 seconds in stereo). Sampling to CompactFlash or Microdrive media allows you to create a sample up to 80 minutes long (mono or stereo). This will occupy approximately 440 Mbytes for monaural, or 876 Mbytes for stereo.
* User installable. You can use 16-Mbyte or 32-Mbyte 72-pin SIMM boards that support Fast Page or EDO, have an access time of 60 nsec (nanoseconds) or faster, and support 11-bit addressing.
