New in KARMA 2.1

KARMA 2.1 provided in OASYS version 1.3 supports User GE memory locations, allows you to select the timing (quantization) for Scene changes and Module triggering, enhances the functionality of the Note Map feature, and many other functions.

User GEs, and creation and editing of GE data

In addition to the 2,048 internal preset GEs (Generated Effects) that generate phrases and patterns within a KARMA module, the OASYS now supports User GEs, with 12 banks of 128 User GEs each (for a total of 1,536).The preloaded Programs of the MOD-7 include more than ninety newly created GEs.

With the optional "KARMA OASYS Software" (dedicated software for the OASYS)* you can create new GEs or edit the factory GEs on your computer, using all of the more than four hundred internal parameters, and transfer them to the User GE memory locations of the OASYS via sysex or the new .KGE file format.

Quantized/Delayed Scene Changes

Scene changes were previously quantized to the next 16th note; now they can be quantized to an interval in the range of a 16th note triplet up to four measures. Since this allows a Scene change to be made at a larger timing value, you can select the next Scene well in advance so that you can be playing with both hands when the Scene change actually occurs. The Scene Status Display provides visual confirmation as to when the scene will change.

Scene Change Quantize Window

Adjustable Quantize Window for each Module

To help you trigger KARMA patterns perfectly in time, even at fast tempos, you can now select a Quantize Window independently for each Module – for example, use a 1/4-note or 8th-note value for less chance of a timing error, or a 16th-note when fancier retriggering effects are desired. Triplet-based values are also provided for retriggering triplet-based grooves "off-beat." This can even be changed in real-time (by mapping it to the Control Surface, for example), so you could change it during live performance to allow quick retriggering in a breakdown section, then set it back to a longer value for more relaxed triggering during the rest of the song.

GE RTC Model information shown in the GE Select dialogs

Extending the ease of use of KARMA version 2, the GE Category and Bank Select Dialogs now show the selected GE's RTC Model, providing an indication of how that particular GE will be mapped to the Control Surface, and some idea about how it is intended to operate.

Copy function added for Note Maps

Note Maps are a useful way to adapt a GE to work with different drum kits, or to "force" a GE pattern into a specific scale or range of notes. You can now copy Custom Note Maps between Programs, Combis, and Songs to enhance your workflow. Additionally, you can copy any of the Global Note Map Tables into the Custom Table, to use as a starting point for further modification. For example, you can copy one of the side-stick/ride note maps for use with a drum kit, and then edit the kick to be mapped to a different note.

Note Map Display shortcut and enhancements

From the KARMA Control tab, you may now touch the small Note Map Display to jump to the Note Map page. Additionally, the Display Module parameter on the Note Map page allows the Note Map for each Module to be viewed and changed if desired.

Improvements to the KARMA GE Page

The Current Scene and Initial (stored) Scene are now displayed on the Play 0-6 KARMA GE page, in the upper left-hand corner of the CCs/Notes Activity section, giving you clear feedback of the Scene status from the display. Additionally, touching the onscreen Module labels in that area now changes the Module Control Layer of the Control Surface, as well as the layer that you are viewing and editing on the screen.

This demo is part of a CD released in Germany by Korg & More to showcase the OASYS. Everything on the demo came from a single OASYS. It is presented in two resolutions in consideration for your Internet connection speed. For the lower resolution version (192 bitrate), click here (mp3, 8.66MB).

A few production notes:

The piano is the EXs-2 Piano (503 MB), slightly edited to suit Andreas’ touch (velocity curve) and taste (filter response).

The drums were played live into the sequencer from the EXs-1 Studio-Standard Kit (I-E 004), again edited slightly to match how Andreas likes to map drum sounds for playing live (some small mistakes were edited out later, of course!).

The percussion part in the middle was generated by KARMA, then resampled and laid back into the track as an audio loop.
